Over the years, Slim mined the Henry Lawson songbook for all it was worth.
He put this track to music as early as 1959 on his Columbia 45, DO4005.
The version you’re hearing here was recorded live in 1972 before an appreciative audience in Wagga Wagga, NSW.
I’ve sometimes wondered why it took Slim some 24 years to record his first official ‘live’ LP…but, it was well worth the wait, as this LP captured Slim at the top of his game.
(Although I must say that…as a ‘comedian’, he made a good singer!!!)
It was released in 1972 on a vinyl LP on EMI’s Axis label, and, at the time of upload, it is still available on CD.
